Green IT: a collaborative approach
In 2020, digital technology represented 4% of world greenhouse gas emissions. Today it represents 7% of these emissions, (twice as much as civil aviation). We are becoming increasingly aware that digital technology is an integral part of our lives. Our homes and industries and even our watches are all becoming connected.
We have a general idea of the positive aspects of digital technology, (time saved, communication, cost-cutting, etc.), but the hidden side of digital technology should not be overlooked:
Environmental impacts: electricity consumption, extraction and depletion of resources and raw materials, water consumption, greenhouse gas emissions
Economic impacts: creation of unused applications or software, disposable consumer goods, price volatility, cybercrime
Social and societal impacts: child abuse, open-air landfill sites in disadvantaged countries, health problems. Issues can also be experienced with addiction or, on the contrary, digital illiteracy and the digital divide (lack of access to computer tools or lack of know-how with these tools).
Political impacts with the financing of raw materials or issues concerning data collection
There is a solution to fight these negative aspects of digital technology: Green IT.
What is it?
The Green IT approach aims to reduce the ecological, economic and social footprint of digital and communications technologies
The aim is to support the group’s digital transformation by making the information system ethical, inclusive and eco-responsible.
The Green IT approach is part of the strategic priorities of our Ambition 2025, particularly on these areas of focus:
To demonstrate this commitment, Green IT is also part of the 5 IT&S foundations strategic plan.
For the IT&S teams, a great deal is at stake, and your contribution is an important part of this!
The approach was launched thanks to the participation of the IT&S in the Sustainable Development week, during which an e-mail box challenge was set up.
To develop this approach, we need the participation of all of our employees. This will be made possible thanks to small actions on a daily basis, such as cleaning up e-mail boxes, switching off devices when you leave work, or reducing the number of print-outs you do.
The IT&S department has drafted its Green IT action plan for the coming year. You will be key to the success of this approach!
