BAUMA 2022
BAUMA, the leading European trade fair for construction machinery, building material machines, mining machines, construction vehicles and construction equipment was held in Munich – Germany from 24 to 30 October 2022. Christophe Lacaze, Marketing Director, reviews the trends that seem to be emerging.
This first edition since the Covid pandemic attracted around 500,000 visitors, a 20% drop in attendance compared to the previous edition.
A delegation composed of marketing, R&D and purchasing members went to the event to observe the trends and innovations presented during the fair.
One of the main themes of the show was alternative power, with many exhibitors showing electric and hybrid models – although many of these were prototypes and not yet commercially available.
Globally speaking,
- All sectors of activity are committed to the electrification of their machines
- New technologies allow more intelligence to be embedded in equipment. They are acquiring new functions that make operations safer. For example, obstacle detection can warn the operator and even adapt the machine’s behaviour to the situation.
- Some prototypes running on hydrogen fuel were also presented, notably in the earth-moving sector.

More specifically in the access platform sector, in addition to the notable presence of Chinese players this year:

- Lithium ion battery packs are now offered by most of the manufacturers present, particularly in the scissor lift range.
- MANITOU unveiled its new range of electric all-terrain articulated platforms available in 16 m, 18 m and 20 m working heights.A removable on-board range extender was also presented as a preview.
- The Chinese players were mainly focused on presenting their range of equipment with no emphasis on the notion of associated services.
- Among the highlights, we saw the modular design of the machines of some of these players, the range extensions on the vertical masts segment or the arrival of scissor lifts equipped with electric actuators to eliminate any risk of oil leakage.
The next Bauma Munich trade show is scheduled for April 2025.
These observations support the group’s blue strategy, unveiled in 2018, which consists of gradually converting our internal combustion engine off-road machines to electric architectures.

The removable range extender remains a strong and differentiating asset in our current and future proposal. Other topics have already been identified: with the aim of offering an ever better TCO, Lithium Ion batteries will progressively complete the range of options offered, starting with the Optimum 8 models for China, then the EC markets in 2023 (mainly Australia and Europe).
